About

Canefield House can be found well down the secluded Greenbank road approximately one-half mile off the Ridge Road. The site sits on a promontory overlooking the ghut, at an elevation of 1500 feet, and is surrounded by verdant tropical jungle. The normal cacophony of sounds includes the local birds, “peeper” frogs, a distant rooster, and your choice of classical, jazz, or reggae music.

Tortola is the largest of the British Virgin Islands, a territory protectorate still tied to Great Britain, but quite independent and economically self-sufficient. The island is just over 17 miles long, with a series of beautiful white coral sand beaches, dramatic steep jungle cliffs, idyllic Caribbean fishing villages, bustling sailing marinas, and the main port and government center of Roadtown along its varied shores. The roads are paved (mostly), driven on the left-side (always), flat along the shores and ridges, and dramatic everywhere else!

The people of Tortola are an amicable balance of families long–descended from the Tortolan plantation era, “down-islanders” from across the Caribbean Sea, professionals in the burgeoning corporate and business services industry, captains and their sailing mates, purveyors of tourist accommodations and services, and British, European, and American “ex-patriates” in some stage of retirement. The scene is seamlessly multi-racial, multi-national, multi-social…and all Tortolan.

The markets of Tortola, and the goods and services they purvey, are modern and generally reasonably priced. They are concentrated on and around Main Street in Roadtown, at Sopers Hole and Cane Garden Bay on the West End, and along the Main Road throughout the East End. The currency accepted and conveyed through local bank ATMs, everywhere, is the U.S. dollar.

Canefield House is designed to accommodate everyone well from fun-in-the-sun-seeking families of eight, to quiet-seeking parties of three couples, to privacy-and-romance-seeking single couples and honeymooners. The place just adapts to the guest’s pace and requirements, and never seems too small nor too big.
